Belize discussion

In the 1990s, a well-known development expert was invited to Belize to implement one of his programs. The project never materialized, because the expert said that the country wasn’t developed enough for him to help it develop.

One of the reasons I wrote Taking Action was to respond to that sentiment. Taking Action is based on the idea that communities everywhere have the capacity to promote their own advancement, and if theories from abroad can’t help them to do that, it’s time to change the theories.

This made it particularly exciting to be able to host a discussion on community development, partly based on Taking Action, in Belize City early this year. My co-host was Alissa Vancour, an economist. These two photos are of friends in Belize and were taken just after the discussion finished.

Campaign for the CRC

I work with the Campaign for U.S. Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is hosting a summit at American University this May.  If you’re interested in promoting the welfare and protection of children (and do you really want to be known as someone who doesn't support the welfare and protection of children?), it’s the place to be.

(Since protecting kids is usually considered a good idea, and on the face of it that's what the CRC is about, I think it's interesting to look at why people don't support the Convention.  It is in support of such scholarship that I offer to you this link.)
